Learning and Development - 2 - 5 Year Old

Mark Making

Everyday the children have opportunities to make marks, using a wide range of media and materials. We support the children's development by providing them with a large range of choices. Children van make marks in a variety of ways, such as paint, chalk, play-doh, pencils, and much much more.

Literacy and Maths

Literacy and Maths are two of the academic areas of learning that we support in our setting through a wide range of resources and adult-led activities. Children are free to access the large amount of books we have available within all areas of the room, as well as the writing equipment. Numbers and letters are displayed throughout the room. Practitioners support the children's learning and understanding by incorporating mathematics into the everyday routine, by reading and making up stories throughout the day, and by providing focus activities as well as access to free choice resources.

Free Flow

Although the room ranges from younger 2's to older 4's, we offer plenty of chances for the children to interact with all their peers regardless of age. This happens during our free flow time where the children are encouraged to choose their own activities and can play with their friends. Staff are there to supervise and promote sustained shared thinking during free play. During free play, the children make their own choices of which activities they would like to access. Staff support them during these activities and it is an excellent opportunity to gain extra insight into the children's learning, because the children may learn more in their own choice of activity than in a planned experience.

Key group time

Every child is assigned a key worker when they begin their journey at Jumping Jo's. Every day, the children have key group time (AM & PM) where their key worker carries out a planned adult-led experience that meets the development targets of the children. These activities are used to support the development of the children, and to promote their learning. Practitioners use their knowledge of the child to plan, assess and review each individual child's learning. We follow the curriculum of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), and also incorporate British Values throughout our everyday practice.

Hygiene routines

Children have access to the toilets and staff encourage / support the children in toilet training, and teach them about washing hands after the toilet, before and after food etc. Staff will supervise and support children in their hygiene routines.

Learning through play

Jumping Jo's is a firm believer that all children learn through play. That is why we encourage the children to make their own choices about toys and equipment they want to play with, and staff are there to support play through sustained shared thinking. It is important to us that our children are given the opportunities to make their own decisions and are encouraged to take part in a wide range of experiences, especially ones that they may not have access to at home.
